Two popular filmmakers teamed up a couple of years back to create a much-anticipated summer movie called “Super 8.” Early on, very little was known about the movie, although clever marketing videos were released hinting at some sort of train crash which released a mysterious monster. Given the track records of both Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams, many were anticipating a huge hit, something perhaps along the lines of “Cloverfield,” an earlier film by Abrams that involved a monster attacking New York City. What they received was something fairly different, a movie that has more accurately been described as somewhat of a cross between Spielberg’s “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “The Goonies.” And unlike most would have expected, the monster in the movie has a relatively minor role.

As the sort of person who has to constantly be doing something, I find it discouraging to be sit around and wait. And while it seems that I have had a fair share of waiting over the past couple of years, I have been able to learn much while I am waiting. That does not make it any easier, but I have definitely had plenty of opportunities to think about waiting, while I wait.

We have all heard the saying, “Be careful what you wish for!” We realize from this that we need to be grateful for what we do have, rather than wishing for different circumstances. Unfortunately, I have fallen into this trap on several occasions, but never more blatantly than a situation I have found myself in over the course of the past week. While I do not believe that wishing in itself is at all a causality, it does lend a sense of irony to such situations.

My first job was helping an elderly lady with some landscaping, a job that eventually grew into a landscaping and lawnmowing business for upwards of a dozen clients. My family helped me get started, and once I went off to college I passed the business on to my siblings. I always knew that I did not want to be in the lawncare business for the rest of my life, but it provided valuable lessons and experiences that I will never forget.

Pop-culture, fads, and trends – elements of society that mysteriously appear and disappear seemingly upon a whim. Personally, I like to think that I try to avoid fads generally, primarily due to the lack of substance usually included with whichever trend is currently rocking the populace. However I do occasionally find myself involved in random trends, which is not necessarily an issue as they are usually harmless enough, although in retrospect silly bands look kind of, well, silly… While I could limit this discussion to physical objects that people collect, I am including relatively new concepts such as memes and trendy internet videos since the digital age seems to be generating an entirely new type of fad: information.

Occasionally I have been asked what programming languages are good to learn for someone interested in software design. In reality, the principles behind each language are very similar, allowing people to accomplish the same things through using essentially a different vocabulary. However, there do tend to be trends with which languages are most popular, and I will make an attempt to address a few of the more common languages today along with their general uses.

You may have noticed that my website has recently undergone a few cosmetic changes. Since my junior year of college, I have used a custom, self-crafted theme on my website that has worked rather well for my professional needs. However, as technology and life have progressed, I have learned more about web standards and entered a new phase in life, meriting an update to my personal website.

In late October the employees at my studio journeyed down to Los Angeles for a company-wide meeting with our LA-based co-workers. We left bright and early in the morning, and returned to the Bay Area late at night. It was a very exciting opportunity, although it made for a very long day.

Last month I made a trip back to the Midwest for a few days. The timing was great, as I was at the point where I needed a break from routine and to visit family. I apologize for not writing for the past several weeks, as I have started a new work schedule and have been playing catch-up on several things. continue »
