A few weeks ago at work many people went out by the bay to watch an event that will likely never happen again: the transport of a space shuttle on top of a carrier plane. With the retirement of the fleet, the Endeavor was the last of the shuttles to be transported and decommissioned. The final resting place is in Los Angeles, but on its way to that location, it flew over Sacramento and San Francisco.
On its loop over the Golden Gate Bridge and down along the Pacific coast, the plane and shuttle flew over DreamWorks in Redwood City. What was interesting and somewhat intriguing to me is that several hours later, hundreds of miles away, our co-workers at our LA studio were also able to observe the shuttle. Granted, the studios are both in major metropolitan areas within the same state, but still, there are very few events that we participate in jointly between the two sites due to geographic separation. This was definitely a very unique experience. continue »

Although this movie has been out for some time, “The Amazing Spider-Man” was a movie that I enjoyed watching enough that I thought I would write a review. It was not the greatest movie ever made, nor was it my favorite movie of the summer. But it was a fun film, and one that I would recommend seeing once if you enjoy superhero movies. continue »

Have you ever considered the differences in interaction between you and your friends? It seems to me that we have, in general, three specific types of friends, at least in the way that we contribute to the relationships. We have friends that are our mentors, friends that walk through the challenges of life alongside us, and friends that we ourselves mentor. continue »

I have decided that it is not worthwhile to ride my bicycle to work. Now, for those of you who were not aware, I recently purchased a bike since I live less than four miles from where I work, with bike lanes covering most of that route. But after initially investing in the bike, the helmet, and so on, I have decided that it is just not practical at the moment. Why not? I am glad you asked! continue »

Social media has long been an area that I have been uncomfortable with. I would much rather interact with friends and family through one-on-one contact than through the mass broadcast of information. But I think I have finally figured out what it is that makes me the most uncomfortable: social media is the electronic form of peer pressure.

Time travel is a concept that has been written about and discussed for many years. The idea of time travel has long been affiliated with the science fiction genre, especially in movies, but even in writings of fiction before movies were around. It is an intriguing idea, but one that I have come to believe that is extremely improbable. I will not go so far as to say that time travel is impossible, but unless there are extreme natural limitations on time travel, I just do not see how it could logically work.

Recently I watched “Zathura: A Space Adventure,” not expecting too much from it since I thought that it would merely be a “Jumanji” knock-off. Surprisingly, I was actually quite wrong. While it is true that, at the most basic level, the story is about two kids that are pulled into a game that destroys their lives until they finish it, there are several rather interesting twists, and they consist of more than just setting the game in space. continue »

I had an intriguing thought the other day. My thought was this: when will phone numbers be phased out? That sounds impossible, given today’s emphasis on everyone have a mobile phone with them all the time and, inherently, a phone-number. It did get me thinking, however, about the various forms of addressing schemes that we use for different aspects of our lives. Now I do not foresee phone numbers disappearing in the near future, but it makes for an interesting discussion, nonetheless.
